Summer is here, and while we love the warm weather, the heat can be tough on our pets. Dogs and cats can't regulate their body temperature the way we do, which means they need a little extra help staying safe and comfortable during the hottest months. Here are our top tips from the team at Ted & Tigg's.

1. Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car

Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach dangerous levels within minutes. This is one of the most preventable causes of heatstroke in pets. If you're running errands, leave your pet at home where it's cool.

2. Watch Out for Hot Pavement

If the pavement is too hot for your bare hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Stick to early morning or evening walks when the ground has cooled down. Grass and shaded paths are always a better bet on hot days.

3. Keep Fresh Water Available at All Times

Hydration is everything in summer. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, cool water — both indoors and outdoors. If you're heading out for a walk or to the park, bring a portable water bottle and collapsible bowl.

4. Create a Cool Retreat

Make sure your pet has a shaded, cool spot to rest. Indoors, keep the air conditioning or a fan running. Outdoors, provide shade and avoid leaving pets outside during peak heat hours (usually 10am–4pm).

5. Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Watch for these warning signs:

• Excessive panting or drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Glazed eyes or confusion
• Collapse

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your vet right away.

6. Be Careful with Water Activities

Not all dogs are natural swimmers! If you're taking your pup to a lake or pool, consider a pet life jacket and always supervise them. Rinse off chlorine or salt water after swimming to protect their skin and coat.

7. Cats Need Summer Care Too

Indoor cats can overheat too, especially in homes without air conditioning. Keep curtains drawn during the hottest part of the day, provide cool water, and watch for signs of overheating. Light-colored and short-haired cats are generally more heat-tolerant, but all cats appreciate a cool, quiet spot to nap.

8. Flea & Tick Season Is Peak in Summer

Warm weather means more fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Make sure your pet is up to date on preventative treatments and check them after outdoor adventures — especially around ears, paws, and underbelly.
