1. Puppy-Proof Your Home
Before your pup arrives, get down on their level — literally. Look for loose cords, small objects they could swallow, toxic plants, and anything chewable you'd rather keep intact. Baby gates are your best friend for blocking off rooms while they're still learning the rules.
2. Stock Up on the Essentials
You don't need to buy everything at once, but a few key items will make the first days much smoother:
- A crate or cozy bed for their own safe space
- Food and water bowls
- Puppy-appropriate food (ask your vet for a recommendation)
- A collar, ID tag, and leash
- Chew toys to save your furniture
- Grooming basics: brush, nail clippers, puppy shampoo
3. Survive the First Night
The first night can be tough — your puppy is away from their littermates for the first time. A warm blanket, a ticking clock (it mimics a heartbeat), and placing their crate near your bed can help them feel less alone. Expect some whimpering, and try to stay calm and consistent.
4. Establish a Routine Early
Puppies thrive on routine. Set regular times for feeding, potty breaks, play, and sleep. A consistent schedule helps with house training faster than almost anything else. As a general rule, puppies can hold their bladder for about one hour per month of age.
5. Socialization Is Everything
The window between 3–14 weeks is critical for socialization. Gently expose your puppy to different people, sounds, environments, and other animals. Positive early experiences shape a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.
6. Start Basic Training Right Away
You don't need to wait until they're older. Simple commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" can start from day one using positive reinforcement. Keep sessions short (5 minutes), fun, and reward-based. Puppies have short attention spans but big appetites for treats!
7. Schedule That First Vet Visit
Book a vet appointment within the first week if possible. Your vet will check for any health issues, set up a vaccination schedule, and answer all those questions you've been Googling at 2am. It's also a great chance to get personalized feeding and care advice.
